To My Children...

Seeing my children grow up right before my very eyes has me all emotional this summer. I know my time with them is limited, and soon my older ones will be leaving the nest. When I was pregnant with a few of them, I wrote them letters. Just a short letter, telling them some of the dreams and desires I had for them. With my oldest being 20, and now a man, I am seeing my dreams for him come to pass.

Every parent has dreams for their children. Here are some of mine....

To my boys-

My dream for you is that you grow into strong, godly men, like your dad and grandpas. You have such good examples in your life. Even though you will never meet my dad this side of heaven, I have told you stories of his walk with the Lord. How he treated your grandma. How he loved me, even when I was unlovable. How he stayed strong, even when he knew he was dying. How he died bravely and confidently, knowing that when he closed his eyes on earth, he would wake in Heaven. Your Pa is also such a good example. He stayed strong in the faith even when friends and family didn't. He raised your dad to love the paths of the Lord. He raised him to walk in the good way. He raised him to work hard, stay pure, and follow the Lord. He raised him to hate sin, despise wickedness, and keep his life clean. You have been given a goodly heritage. Don't take that lightly.

My dream is that you stay pure until marriage. It's rare that that happens, but it can be done. I want you to stay pure in your mind, your heart, and your body. Save yourself for your future wife. You won't regret it.

My dream is that you value women. Women aren't to be bullied, talked down to, or trodden over. Women are to be cherished and loved. They are to be honored and treasured. Finding a good wife is a good thing, and I pray that God will send her to you in his timing.

My dream is that you follow the Lord all your days. Stay in church. Raise your family in church. Teach them that the commandments are not grievous, but they are good. They will keep you from trouble. They will bring true liberty in Christ. The Christian life is a good life. It's a happy life. It's a joyous life.

My dream is that you keep sin out of your life. Sin brings bondage. It brings baggage. It brings burdens that I don't want you to have to carry.

My dream is that eventually, you be a great dad to my grandkids. That you love them, and cherish them, and bring them up in the way you have been brought up.

My dream is that you will never be known as a bully, but as someone who has character, and decency, and treats others with respect and kindness. You don't need to flaunt your manliness or boast about your strengths. Those will come through without you beating your chest. True manliness is shown through the little things- the hard work that you accomplish. The way you treat your fellow man. The way you treat your wife and mom and sisters. The way that you stand against sin. The way you eschew evil. That's where true manliness is exhibited.

My dream is that you are faithful. Faithful to the Lord, your family, your church- that faithfulness is exemplified in your life.

My dream is that you do two simple things your entire life. Love God. Love your neighbor. If you get those two things down, everything else will fall into place.

For my girls-

My dream for you is that you grow up to be virtuous women. Virtuous means simply, having or showing high moral standards. You are special. You are treasured. You are unique. Hold yourself to a high standard, knowing that you have worth. You have value. You are priceless. The world often degrades women, and mocks them, and belittles them, but don't listen to the noisy, clamorous nonsense. You are jewels.

My dream is that you keep yourself pure until marriage. You are worth waiting for. If someone comes along and tries telling you to do something without wanting the commitment, they aren't worthy of you. Wait until someone comes along who is willing to work for you, and wait for you, and commit to you.

My dream for you is that you grow in the knowledge and grace of the Lord. Learn to dig into his Word. Learn to work on the fruit of the Spirit. Learn to be compassionate, and caring, and learn to put the needs of others above your own.

My dream for you is that you learn balance. The balance of knowing when to speak, and knowing when to keep silent. When to fight for justice, and when to leave it in the Lord's hands. When to have an opinion, and when to leave it alone. It's not all or nothing. You can be someone who is gentle, but also knows how to speak with conviction when needed.

My dream is that you always remain classy, even in tough situations. It's rare nowadays, and sometimes it's hard, but you can do it. Stay classy.

My dream for you is that you use whatever personality the Lord gave you to serve him. If you are outgoing, then use that for the Lord. If you are quieter and like to do things unseen, then find a ministry that will best use that gift. There is a ministry for everyone. God didn't make us all the same. We are all different. We have different personalities, and temperaments, and character strengths and weaknesses. Recognize those strengths and use them where they will flourish.

My dream for you is that you become women of dignity, and honor, and valor. Those are all wonderful things, and it would be a great thing to be known as a woman who exhibited those traits in her life.

My dream is that you grow into kind humans. Just be kind. You don't know the battles that people may be facing, and the words you speak to them can bring life, or pain. There is power in words, and your tongue can do a lot of damage, or it can help build someone up. Choose wisely.

My dream is that you grow into honest, truthful people. Tell the truth, even when it's hard. Tell the truth, even when it means consequences. God sees if you are deceitful, God sees if you lie. Remember that you are accountable to him. Let him help guide your tongue.

My dream is that someday, when you have children of your own, and you are running your own home, that you will finally know just how much I love you. I can't put it into words- the depth, the magnitude, the strength of my love for you- but one day, you'll know.

My dream is that you do two things in life. Love God. Love your neighbor. If you do those two things, everything will fall into place.

For my children-

My dream is that you grow to be Christians who love the Lord, love your family, love your church, and love others.

I couldn't care less if you are successful as far as a career and making money. We need money to survive, but that's about it. There are so many other important things in this world. Money will never bring you happiness. True happiness is found in loving the Lord and loving others.

My dream is that you all get saved young and live a life free from most of the burdens and baggage that plague so many people today. It's a crazy world, but you have so many people that love and care for you. Don't ever take that for granted.

The way of the Lord is truly the best way. Hard times will come, but don't get bitter. God has a plan, and sometimes there is a bump or two along the way. Everything works out to his purpose.

My dream is that someday you will know how much I love you. How much I pray for you. How much I want you to live happy lives. You may not know just how much yet, but you will someday.

You have already brought me so much joy, but if you do the things I mentioned, it is enough.

It is enough for my Mama heart, and it is enough to bring you SO much happiness in this world.

Love God. Love others.
